Map 1. Close-up from Nautical Map of Eastern Caribbean.
This is only a small portion of a map that includes the entire Caribbean basin. Fine reproduction of a mariner's navigational map, published originally in London, 1784. The map illustrates both the centrality of Nevis in the Lesser Antilles and how small the island really is in comparison to other sugar islands of the region. St Martin/St.Maarten is shared by France and Holland, while Montserrat, Antigua, and Barbuda remain British colonies. St Christophers (St Kitts) and Nevis are a federated independent nation. St Bart is Swedish. St Eustatius (Statia) and Saba are the Dutch Windwards.
St Kitts was initially settled by both French and English colonizers--a situation that proved untenable as the two nations were constantly at war through the seventeenth century.
